Orchid Help!

Morning, wonder if anyone can help?

A few people I know have orchids that have now finished flowering. 1 of them has been without flowers for 3 years now. How do we get them to flower again? The plants themselves look lovely and healthy just no flowers.

Thanks x

We seem to have success , its had 'new' life for the last three attempts.
After last flower falls , cut stem down to near base .
Support 'new' stem with stick .

What variety is it? My Mom grows orchids, and some do take long to flower. perhaps change the potting mixture, feed it in the spring.
    Loving the sunny days!

What shape of leaves does it have (this will help us identify it).
I have lot sof prchids with the wide flat leaves, which flower intermittently, and one with long almost grass like leaves which is a sulker and has only flowered once for me.
Each type needs different conditions in terms of sunlight and warmth, so if you can describe or identify your orchid type we can take it from there...

Sorry to jump in on the thread but how long should orchids flower for? I bought one weeks and weeks ago and it's still covered in flowers. Two or three fell off recently due to me being away and it getting a bit dry, other than that the flowers don't seem to wilt at all? Yes, it is a real orchid not plastic ;) lol

Thanks for the replies. They are the ones with wide, fairly flat leaves and lots of white flowers with pink middles. Mine is from M&S, the ones they seem to always have loads of in there and I've seen them in all the big supermarkets today.

I love orchids! On the site where I work some very rare Bee orchids grow wild, they're lovely, so tiny and I love the fact they are rare and only a handful of people know where to find them!

I was given a very nice orchid in flower in August. Out of curiosity I left the plastic sleeve around it to see if keeping it out of draughts would keep it flowering for longer. It has now (Christmas) just become tatty....so that would be 5 months.
I shall inspect the flower stems and cut them off above a 'node' in the hope that it will flower again from those stems rather than have to generate a whole new stem for flowering, which takes longer.

My orchids of that type are kept on a north-west facing windowsill, and given an egg-cup of water every week. I wouldn't say I'm great at getting them to flower consistently, but they do flower.
They are the phalaenopsis orchids - these guys... http://www.orchid.org.uk/phalcult.htm

There's an article here http://www.ivensorchids.co.uk/phalaenopsis.htm which mentions giving the orchid a 'shock' so perhaps show it your latest gas bill! :rotfl:
