Does anyone on here that has SKY bothered to take out the extended warrenty as I received a call today from SKY saying that my box is nearly out of warrenty and for an extended warrenty it will be £5.99 a month or a one off payment of £50 for 14 months warrenty.

I am not going to bother taking out the extra warrenty as I anything goes wrong I will just threaten to cancel my subscription and see if they come out for free as they say it is a £80 call out charge but if not I will just cancel my subscription or get a local SKY person to sort it out

What do people think on the SKY extended warrenty?

    The word is warranty.

I got a free box when I signed up, I needed a repair and quite clearly stated after 18 months, new box or no new contract.

They gave me a free box that works.

It was either that or they lose out on £60 average per month.

Nope, IMHO it's a waste of money. When my Sky+ box failed last year out of warranty, I said that I wanted a free replacement or I'd cancel. They replaced it for £65 with a brand new model and I sold the old one on eBay (described as faulty) for about £80 IIRC. And at the time I didn't even have a channel subscription - just the £10/month Sky+ sub. ;)

I used to sell the extended warrenty for sky many moons ago :)

Personally I dont take any extended warrenties out. As others have said you can threaten to cancel and they will often agree a reduced price to fix things to keep your custom but they dont always! I personally have a spare sky box anyway as I kept it when I upgraded to sky+ and I am using a comunal dish so no sky cover for that in my case anyway.

Even the warranty doesn't guarantee that you won't have to wait a week before somebody shows up to investigate. Better to buy a spare (used) Digibox off eBay (£25 - £30) and a spare LNB. Not much more that can go wrong unless a rat chews your cable or an large sparrow moves the dish out of alignment! ;)

BTW this site has lots of Sky info:
