Weekly Gas Usage

Out of interest I took a gas meter reading a week ago to see how much usage I`d have in this extremely cold weather.
Having just read the meter again today, I`ve used 26 units which equates to 803.94 kwh and in my case £30-53p. (3.675p per kwh including vat).

This is having the heating on for only about 8 hours in a 24 hour period.
At this rate, just for gas alone, we`re talking about £366 a quarter.
(4 bed detached house)

Any comments, besides move supplier, which I`m in the middle of doing.
Is this average usage or less or more?
It might be helpful if you post to state how big the property is,supplier, how many hours a day it`s on, etc.,

  • Well I did a reading 2 days ago and over 17 days so call it 2 weeks for argument's sake we have used £61.51 so equates to £3.60 a day, and we have had the heating on for approx 8 hours a day, sometimes up to 17 hours a day if we've been off work, and we live in a 4 bed end of terrace, 90% double glazed, no insulation to speak of really, so we'll use about £110 a month, we're on BG Online Saver with energy smart. I like to be warm, its one of the only luxuries I afford myself!

    CC limits £26000

    Long term CC debt £0

Total low rate loan debt £3000

    Almost debt free feeling, priceless.

Ex money nightmare, learnt from my mistakes and never going back there again, in control of my finances for the first time in my adult life and it feels amazing.
  • That doesn't seem to add up. Your 26 gas units (assuming that's 26 cu metres) equates to approximately 290 kWh. I used 517 kWh for last week so yours seems low. I'm in a 3 bed semi, heating has been on for about 8 to 10 hours each day over the last week. I'm on a two tier EDF v5 tariff, 5.5p high and 3.2p low.
  • I've just started doing this so I can't give you much info yet. I've also signed up to Oxford Uni's site here which looks good & I'm hoping will allow me to compare my freezing house & obscene heating bills with others
& as for some happy ending I'd rather stay single & thin :D

    26 units x 2.83 x 1.02264 x 39.6 divide by 3.6 = 827-70kwh x 3.675p = £30-41

If you are multiplying by 2.83 you must have an old Imperial meter?

    That is correct.
But I wouldn`t mind the gas company forgetting to muliply by 2.83

That breaks back at about 54p a hour to run your boiler, which does not seem excessive at all.

i take meter readings every week, ive used £21.73 in the last 7 days. 3 bed detatched with a new worcester combi boiler.its the highest weekly reading so far. in the summer i was using around £3.00 per week. heatings been on for about 12 hours per day this week.

i used 53 units (metric meter). i am with ebico and ive worked it out that each unit on the gas meter costs me 41 pence.
3.675 pence per kwh with ebico.

p.s have you got a newish boiler, because since ive had this new boiler fitted the gas consumption has got significantly lower. i would say 35% cheaper than the 20 year old boiler i had previously.
  • Week ending 26 Dec in a 3 bed bungalow in very cold weather with heating on from 7am til 10.30pm I used 22.5 imperial units. Newish Worcester condensing boiler, 10 radiators with 3 switched off some of the time.

Only if you expect "this extremely cold weather" to continue for 3 months ;)
