Unpaid postage, buyer filed a dispute

I really can't understand some people. I sold an item to a buyer who failed to pay postage, just the price of the item. In the auction it is clearly listed as the price of postage to Europe. I have emailed the buyer several times (in German and English) that he hasn't paid postage. I have received an email from the buyer who tells me he will pay the extra postage and then he decides to file a dispute for an item not received. Paypal have deducted the amount I received for the item.

So once again, Ebay are on the side of some clown who is clearly in the wrong and doesn't want to pay postage. What can I do other than explain in my replies to the dispute ?

can I just clarify? Buyer paid only the auction amount and not the postage so you asked him to pay the rest as well, correct?

Did you refund the original amount or did you keep it, if you kept it then buyer can (and has) just reclaimed it) and paypal have correctly refunded him as you have not sent the goods. If you did not have the postage in the postage section then the invoice when buyer went through checkout would have shown no postage, soin future the way to avoid this happening is to add all the postage for the countries you ship to into the postage section. That way when buyer goes through checkout the postage is automatically picked up and he can't pay without paying the postage as well.

  • It was listed as Free in the UK. In my auction description it clearly stated postage fees for overseas. Ebay forces you to list for free for certain priced goods in Turbo lister.

If I refund the money paid for the item, the buyer may see that as backing out of a sale and leave bad feedback. You can't really win.

Even if postage is free in the UK you can add postage for overseas buyers and it is best to do so in media categories as otherwise the buyer can claim it showed as free when he bid and the invoice confirmed that. Your terms in the auction are difficult to enforce even if they are correct and allowed, so it is always best to take a belt and braces approach to avoid 'clever' buyers.

I sell most of my items in the media categories, my 1st postage option (2nd class ) shows as free, however I also add to the postage boxes an additional cost of a few pence if buyer wishes to upgrade to 1st class post, plus I list postage for Europe and for the Americas and Australia which are the other places i usually sell to. Then when a buyer goes through checkout their overseas address automatically triggers ebay to put in my postage details, so I avoid any problems.

There are only 2 overseas postage rates if you use RM, Europe and worldwide so it is not that time consuming to add the postage uplift for those countries.

AS for negative feedback I think by not refunding promptly and forcing the buyer into making a complaint I think you risk that already.

In the postage box you can expand it to show other options, Just add two boxes for foreign and state 'custom locations' then do one for Europe with a set price and one for Worldwide. I limit my worldwide sales mainly to US Canada and Australia, but you cna pick and choose from the options given.

Just remember when selling expensive items or phones to remove those overseas options entirely , take them out completely and tick the box for 'no international shipping' as otherwise they can bid and you end up in a muddle again.
