Retailer or Paypal responsible?

Options
Hi! I'll be massively grateful if anyone can help me with this.

My OH was actually thoughtful for once and bought me some lovely costume jewelery for Christmas. BUT the website only accepted Paypal and somehow Paypal supplied the wrong address and my Christmas pretties have ended up being sent to a house we haven't lived in for 4 years.

OH uses Paypal a lot with ebay and this has never happened before. The old address definitely wasn't the default address on Paypal.

Paypal haven't accepted responsibility for the lost item. What can we do?
That money talks - I can't deny,
I heard it once - it said 'goodbye'!

Paypal don't use any address other than the one registered on your account, therefore as long as sender can show that items were delivered to the address that paypal gave them they do not have to refund.

  • Have you checked that the PayPal addresses are actually correct?

eBay sellers can see the address in your eBay account AND your PayPal account if you pay via PayPal, so if the PayPal one is wrong but the eBay one is correct, that's why it has always seemed OK until now.

This was not on ebay though and regardless of that for paypal protection the only address that matters to a seller is the one that paypal give them. Sellers should always ignore any other address, including any registered on ebay.

I got that the current problem was a sale NOT via eBay, but if all previous PayPal purchases were via eBay, and the addresses in PayPal and eBay are different (i.e. the PayPal one is incorrect), it could be that the eBay sellers were using the eBay address.

As an infrequent eBay seller I had no idea that you're only supposed to use the address supplied by PayPal, so thank you for mentioning that. It's also possible that the sellers the OP used were equally unaware.
