Contents insurance - locks on the house

I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice?

My contents insurance is due for renewal. I went onto a price comparison site and started filling out in the form. It asked me about the locks on my doors. Well, I don't know what type of locks they are.

The lock on the front door is one that can be put in the latch but when I shut it behind me, I just pull the door shut. The front door is wooden with some small glass panels.

The lock on the back door is one where you lift the handle and can then turn the key to lock it. It's a UPVC door.

Can anyone help me?

  • The UPVC door is a multi-point locking mechanism - when you lift the handle, a lock comes out but several other locks also lift up into position.

The lock on the front door is a rimlock - it sits on the edge (rim) of the door.

Both of these, if relatively new, could be the "5 lever" locks the websites are asking about (very old UPVC doors used to only come with a 3 lever lock and you can still by some pretty useless rimlocks!). Have a look on the edge of the UPVC door to see if there are any markings on it. In particular, you are looking for a british standard number. For the rimlock, the manufacturers website should tell you.

If you get really stuck, find an old bloke in a hardware shop and ask him if he can identify the number of levers in the lock from the keys. If you get a copy of each cut at the same time, I'm sure he'll be helpful!!
