breakdown cover questions??

hi
I want to take out breakdown cover for my 1995 ford mondeo but with all the choices, Im struggling to pick one. Just got few questions if someone can help.
Do all the policies only cover if your car is completely immobilised, as the problem I had recently with the car was that it was struggling for power and kept cutting out every time had to stop (but started up again no problems). Ive had this fixed now but wondered if it was to do it again, would I be covered by a breakdown policy for ths type of problem?

Second question is when the policy states recovery to any uk destination if cannot fix locally, does this mean they'll try to take it to a local garage first but if not they'll take you anywhere, cos I have couple of reliable garages I like to use and so if broke down and couldnt be fixed by callout man, then would want the car taking there.

Last question (I promise) is about the tesco vouchers and using them for RAC membership. This was my plan but its taken me ages to get £8 of vouchers which are worth £32 in the deals but the RAC cover Ive been looking at is £69 online (I think £87 offline). Can I use the vouchers in part payment and then pay the difference?

Sorry for long post but just wanna pick the best (and cheapest) policy.

Thanks

    a) I think you would need to ring up the Breakdown cover operators to confirm what exactly they would class as a Breakdown. IMO, If your car was struggling for power it is not safe to drive and they would come out.

    b) That depends on the policy. Some state they will take it to a garage within 10 miles and thats it. Some states Nationwide. They wouldn't take it to a local garage and then move it to anoter garage - they would only tow you once.

    c) Some Tesco deals allow for part payment. Im 99% sure RAC isnt one of them. Have a look at Martins advice on breakdown cover. Alot of people on here recommend AutoAid for £32 ... and then you could use your vouchers elsewhere :)

As a side note, your car is 11 years old now. Make sure the recovery firms will actually cover a car that old, not all of them do.

I am sure it will vary between insurers but if the vehicle cannot be safetly driven then I would imagine the majority would cover

There are different levels of cover - if you have the "any destination" then it will typically mean that if they cannot fix it at the road side then they will go on and take you to your destination of choice but remember that if that destination isnt a garage you will not be able to call them out to then take it over for the actual repairs. Again this varies between insurers but it is the norm.

Many insurers give healthy discounts if you include breakdown with your motor insurer.
