Having been looking for a car for a 19 year old but seems that since the scrapage scheme there are few cheap and cheerful cars with a years MOT to be had. Was wondering if anyone has any ideas on where we could search for one. Have tried used cars ni, itv cars website and autotrader. He has an insurance quote for £1350 for a 10 year old group one, third party only!

Wow - I thought my insurance was bad. (about the same last April at 18 with a fault claim on a group 5 car fully comp)
Try eBay for cheap bangers - although like you say scrappage is hurting the avaialbility of old small cars0 -
Who was the insurance with? Actually had a quote of.....£8800!!! what a waste of 15 minutes on the phone.
Will have a look at ebay, any advice on how i can set it only to check locally?0 -
I'm insured with Elephant at the moment
- £600 excess (350 voluntary) with 2 older named drivers.
You can search locally on eBay using the options down the left hand side after you've searched - something like "show only results within X miles of <postcode>"0 -
Also, maybe try https://www.gumtree.com. If there is one in your area, there are good deals on there occasionally. But be aware, the insurance is going to be very expensive as he is young. Maybe try an older person as the policyholder and have him named as a driver on the policy. This should bring the premium down.
Hope this helps you.0 -
He has been named on my policy up to now but that only covers social use and not commuting to work hence he needs his own car and own insurance. Thanks for the advice so far had a look at them all but even 10year old cars with high milage seem to be very over priced.0

Hi icookalot,
I'm about to put my old ka on gumtree. From what I've seen I think the prices are fair and the cars do seem to sell but I'll keep an eye on this thread to see if anyone has any better suggestions. Good luck finding a car for your son.

Edit: From memory I think if you put an older driver onto your son's insurance as a named driver (not as the main policy holder) it can bring the premium down, even if the older driver never actually drives the car.0 -
i found yes car insurance good for young drivers previously or hughes were good for me now i have maturd a bitlove you lots like jelly tots0

Be very careful on Gumtree, I sold my car via gumtree a week later it was back on gumtree and had been clocked : o My advice - always do a vehicle check before buying its cheap for peace of mind.0
