T- Bleeding- Mobile!

Sorry for the longs post all but...

My husband got his mobile bill last week and to our horror it was £70  !! Normally its around the £25 mark

On the itemised billing it shows that there were 5 mobile internet calls made in a row totalling 6.5 hours of surfing, starting from 6 am to 12.30pm! All of this on a wednesday.

When my OH phoned t-mobile and eventually (after an hour and 15 mins) got to the right section, they determined that the calls were made from Reading.

a) my OH is in bed by 6am because he works nights, so no way could he have made them.

b) He does work from Reading (he's a HGV Driver) BUT he leaves work by 5.15 latest and would not be on it there at 12.15 in the afternoon!

c) Who in thier right minds would surf the net on a mobile for over 6 hours and

d) The 1 and only time my OH did try using the internet on it, it wouldn't connect because WAP is disabled. (This was over 2 months ago)

The chappie who spoke to my OH said they would ring back the next day after he had spoken to his manager... surprise surprise he didn't. Today hubby rang again and was told the bill still stands, the only thing they would do is disable wap, which is already done

The money is supposed to go out on monday coming but to be honest we don't have the extra £45 to spend at the moment, sooooo....

Anyone have any ideas?

Rant over!!

Cheers,
Lea x

Firstly, you need to consider that T-Mobile’s billing could be accurate. Where was the mobile handset when T-Mobile allege the calls took place? Could someone have had access to it in your home, or did your OH accidentally leave it at work?

The next point is that you can’t “disable” WAP. WAP is a bit like, say, using your web browser on your home computer. It’s something you can do over a network connection, but not the only thing you can do over it. And, it’s not the same thing as the connection itself. There are two different types of mobile connection – dial-up and GPRS. When you say WAP is disabled, you probably mean GPRS is disabled. So, your OH can’t use WAP over a GPRS connection, or do anything else that requires a GPRS connection, such as picture messaging. However, WAP can still be used over dial-up. This is similar to saying that, if your home telephone line doesn’t have broadband, you can still access the Internet using dial-up. You can check whether WAP was used using dial-up. Dial-up calls are charged only by duration. GPRS connections are charged by the amount of data transferred – while there may also be an indication of the duration of the connection, there’ll be a value for the amount of data transferred, measured in kB.

If the money is to be taken by direct debit, your OH could try cancelling the direct debit. But, as the money’s coming out on Monday, I suspect your OH might be too late. He’d have to contact his bank and ask them.

    Cheers for the reply:

The mobile handset was in our house in Camberley: GU47, where the calls were made from Reading: postcode RG10. The only people in our house are Me, OH and our 1 yo daughter. Theres no way that she could make 5 calls over 6 hours without me noticing.

We only use the phone for Calls and a text once in a blue moon. My OH is not very technical minded when it comes to phones and tbh we wouldn't be able to afford to send MMS/download games/music. He hates the games and simply thinks a phone is to make calls.

    The bill just says:
    Date Time Type £ Duration
    wed 24th may 06.20 WAP Call 0.248 2.55
    06.35 WAP 11.310 2.12.54
    08.48 WAP 10.212 2.00.00
    10.48 WAP 10.212 2.00.00
    12.48 WAP 0.125 1.28

I've just got onto our bank online and cancelled the DD, whilst DH has just cancelled his contract. Hopefully they wont try to take the money out and land us with another £30 failed dd fee

Put your complaint in writing and make sure that you let them know immediately that you are disputing the calls. I would almost be inclined to say stop the direct debit and pay what you believe you owe them by cheque. I am not sure what you can do about this though (thousands have tried this excuse before therefore when a genuine one comes along they are less liekly to believe you)

  • I queried a charge to mobile phoen once and they did a check and confirmed that the call had been made form my handset - each phone has some sort of unique identifying code which I believe (correct me if wrong) which woudl nto match

T mobile were also able to tell me the type of handset used

have T mobile confirmed that the code matches?

WE're going to send a cheque for the amount on the bill that WE have used so - Internet calls and VAT. DH is also going to get onto OFTEL on Monday morning to put a complaint in.

I really can't see how this has happened but we are so certain it was nothing to do with us that we're going to fight this all the way!

Thanks for all your comments and replys and heres hoping that we can get it sorted without too much hassle. TBH i think we've spent the extra £40 on calls to bloody t-mobile already lol

i hate to pick faults but i see things a little differently...
i used to be on t-mobile and wap used to have to be activated, and also if a handset is bought on a particular network and then used on a different network the settings have to be altered so it can access wap on the new network.
things arent the way they were before, you wouldnt even recognise me anymore- not that you knew me back then ;)
