Faulty Toy - Advice please

Back in mid October I purchased a 'Hot Wheels' Toy for my son while it was on offer in Toys R Us (£20 instead of £40). The toy was then immediately put away unopened, for Christmas.
Christmas day arrives - the toy is opened for the first time and it does not make the expected sounds that it should, i've replaced the batteries that came with it without success.
I still have the receipt and packaging, am i entitled to a replacement ? I've looked on the Toys R Us website and the item is no longer stocked, i'm hoping they may still stock it in store or alternatively allow me to exchange it for other 'Hot Wheels' toys to the same value.
Thanks.

Yes you are entitled to a repair or replacement if the item is faulty under the SOGA up to 6 months after purchase.
They will probably give you a credit note or similar.0 -

just to add, if you dont have your receipt, they will only credit note you to the last selling price of the item, so if it went down further , to say, £10, they will only credit note you for 10.
i had this with a faulty toy i returned yesterday it was 15 but they were out of stock and last known price was £10 even though i could tell them the exact dat and time of purchase
oh, and i also had to show id to return it although no idea why??Can you see the mountains through the fog?0 -
100% they must by law exchange it or refund you as it is faullty.0

Yes but after the first 6 months the onus is on the purchaser to prove the item had an inherent fault, and I am not sure the OP would be interested in going to the expense of an independent report for the sake of a toy.0 -

Many thanks for all the advice everybody - I took it back to Toys R Us this morning, they gave us a credit note for £20 as they no longer stock the item in question.Started Comping in August 2014
