First MOT!

I bought my car 08/08/2003. And to my understanding I will need my 1st MOT soon. I booked for my an MOT on Monday. My question is does it have expiry date once I get the certificate? Where does the MOT needed, is it for tax disc or car insurance? I know these are very stupid questions and a lot of you might laugh but just want to have a clue.

Thanks in advance.

An MOT certificate lasts one year, and is a legal requirement. You will need to show it when you tax your car.

Although alot of people claim your insurence isn't valid with no MOT, this is not usually the case. But if you have no MOT and are involved in an accident that was caused by a problem with the car that would fail an MOT your insurance won't pay out.

    edit: cross posted, oh well.

If you wait until one month before the date of first registration, you will get an MOT for 13 months because they can forward date it by that much if you take the V5 with you. Getting it done on Monday means that this will only happen if the vehicle was registered on or before 26th July 2006.

I am not sure that I understand your point Boosyboots. I have just check my V5 document and registration date was 08/08/03. Do you mean that it would be best to schedule my MOT on 08/07/06?

Another reason why I scheduled my MOT earlier so that I could renew my tax disc which will expires on 31/07/06 and that we are going to America at the end of July.

You can mot your car up to 30 days before the old one expires, and it will be added onto the new one,so effectively giving you 13 months, instead of 12.However,because you car was new,you will need to ask at a testing station how this works,as your car was new when you bought it.

As you will need an mot for your car from the 8/8,then you may be able to take your car in for test,a couple of days beforehand, that way if it does need any work on it,you will have the mot in time for the date requested. And don't always think that you have to take into the dealer you bought the car from as well.Shop around for prices and ask other people you know, who is the best place to take it to in your area.

Unlike the old style mot,the new one, once done,is now registered by the testing station, with the dvla,so should you get pulled by pc plod, they will know instantly if your car has an mot,by checking on the police computer.

As for your car tax,you can buy this up to 15 days before the old one expires, and again, you will,in effect, get 6.5/12.5 months on your new one,as the post office will issue it for the start of the following month after expiry.

To get the MOT one month before expiry on a 3 yr old car just take the V5 with you to the testing station.

Agree with molerat. My car was three years old last September so I could get the MOT anytime after 30th August and not have to have done again until the end of September this year if I choose.

Bisoy, you can still tax your car. You do not need the MOT certificate as at the point of taxation this year, your car does not require one. You will get the renewal from the DVLA and it will show that you need insurance and have a note at the bottom reminding you that it will need an MOT soon. Move your MOT to no earlier than the 8th July and get the most from the system.

I was in exactly this position last year, so I do know how it works.

If you are going to America,(unless taking car with you) why tax the car just to let it stay idle, how long are you going for? you could declare the car SORN, until you get back, however if it is for less than 1 month there will be no advantage.

We are going at the end of July for two weeks and will take the car and leave it in the hotel in Manchester. My tax disc expires 31/07/06 so that is why I need one before we go.

I have cancelled and re-book my appointment on the 12/07/06.Lets say for example I brought it to Arundale where I bought the car and failed, Am I oblige to have the work done on their garage or can I go somewhere?
