Having to prove no claims bonus?

My husband has 3 vans in his business -one of these has 6 years no claims bonus and the others 1 year each. Up until recently they were all insured with the same company but, when the last two vehicles came up for renewal at the end of November, we changed to new insurers. The new company said that although each of the vehicles only had 1 year no claims they would take into account the 6 years on the other vehicle. All we had to do was provide the contact details of the company which insured this van. We thought this was all ok but the new insuance co has now written to us saying that as the van with the 6 years, had only been insured by the same company since 06 then we had to provide proof of the other 3 years from the previous companies. They gave us a deadline to provide this information or pay an additional £250.
Does anyone know if this is common? They say we have to do this to prove that the six years weren't ' broken'. I've been looking through past accounts and have found contact details for the older policies but when I rang one of them, Directmotorline, it took me to the office of Aquote who could find no record of the policy.
Thanks for reading and any help appreciated

Hi
I've not heard of this before.
Usually your proof of NCD will not specify the time period you were insured with your current insurer, only the number of years you have.
I was very surprised when I signed up for a company, Post Office or M+S can't remember now, then cancelled the policy after only a couple of days (within the 14 day cooling period, with no charges) and they automatically sent me a proof of NCD for 9 years without ever asking me to provide proof of it to them as I cancelled it so quickly as I found a much better deal elsewhere.

I don't think it's common, but I'm not sure that helps you at all.
If they are insiting on it, then you either have to provide it or go elsewhere.
I would try seeing if they will accept the "partial" history you have.
If there is only one year missing then the rest should show all the dates are correct and it's continuous.
But make sure you allow enough time to go elsewhere if they don't allow it.0
