Millets wont exchange my broken-when-bought jacket

Good afternoon all,
Back in November I bought a jacket from a non-local Millets, but after a few days of use I noticed that the zip doesn't "clip together" at the bottom. The first few times I thought it was me doing it "wrong", but no matter what anyone does it will not connect at the bottom.
Today I was in the vacinity of the shop I bought the jacket from, so I went in to exchange it for a "working" jacket. I was told by the person at the till that "zips are not govered by our guarantee" - is this true? Are they allowed to do that? What are my options? Do I have any options?! I thought things had to be in fully working order when you bought them, or something along those lines.
Can anyone advise me?
Many thanks,
Jonathan

Thanks pendulum! Is there anything I can quote (e.g. sale of goods act) if they give me any trouble?0
-
Their "guarantee" canot override statute. In this case it's the Sale of Goods Act.0

Thanks pmduk, I shall go and have another go at them tomorrow - wish me luck!0

Just to clarify SOGA specifies that goods 'must be fit for purpose' - in which case a jacket with a zip would be expected to have a fully closing zip ...
the goods must also be 'of merchantable quality' ie fit for sale - broken/faulty zip = unfit for sale.

I no longer buy things with zips from Millets, because they always break!0

When the shop is busy just loudly announce to everyone in the shop to be careful what they buy and explain your predicament. I'm pretty sure you'll get an exchange pretty swiftly.0

Success! I took that jacker back today, and the manager exchanged my broken one for a new one.
Thanks to you all for your advice!0 -
