If you really need encryption then just use a normal flash drive with Truecrypt (as long as you use it on computers with administrator priviledges and you're not going to get any better as far as encryption goes).

It's the way it manages internet use I like as I'm going to be using public WiFi and thought it would be good security. plus I carry a lot of identity info with me which I wouldn't want exposed

Even Ironkey themselves simply adapted opensource software but use their own proprietary nodes. Pretty much everything you want then seems to be available open source which is much much more trustworthy than anything proprietary. Security is one area where open source really comes into its own.
