Buying Land

I bought a plot of land at an auction recently. I’m paying for it with my own money so there will be no mortgage on it. The auctioneers/estate agents advised me to get a solicitor ASAP and advise them who I’ll be using.
Do I really need a solicitor or conveyancer to do this or can I do it myself? Bearing in mind, I have seen the contract and am happy with it, and the relevant searches were done prior to auction by the vendor and included in the legal pack.
As far as I can see I just need to pay the balance, sign the contract, and get the land registered in my name. Is there a lot more to it than that? Am I missing something?
If a conveyancer is needed then what would be a reasonable figure to expect to pay? One thing I do want to do is pay the vendor or his solicitors the balance directly. I don’t see the point of giving my solicitor the money, then them passing it on to the vendor and paying the solicitor a fee to do it. I know this is the traditional way of doing it but I just don’t like the idea of putting another link in the chain and apart from making some interest for the solicitors, it’s pointless.
Any help or advice greatly appreciated.
