Advise required on rejecting goods from Wickes

Options
Hi All

During the summer I decided to replace the old asbestos based flat roof on my garage, as part of this was damaged
I removed the old roof and had the council remove the asbestos sheets.
We decided to replace with Corrugated bitumen based roof sheets from Wickes, at a cost of £196.00
These have been fitted for five months and have started to sag and distort badly and hold water, other customers have reported the same thing on the Wickes website. Which I obviously didn't see before purchase.
This sheets are not strong enough for the job, we only have a maximum of 3 foot between each supporting beam.
Basically the roof is now no good and worse than it was before, up to now it is not leaking into the garage. But is going to need replacing.
I have taken photos and plan to write to Wickes with copies of my receipts rejecting the goods under the sale of Goods act being 'not fit for purpose' and asking for a refund.
Wickes own terms state goods must be returned unused for a full refund within six months.
Do you think I have a good case.
Thanks
Mike

Your problem is proving the purpose they are not fit for. Wickes did not know what roof they were being applied to - I presume you did not ask them for a recommendation. Have you used them in accordance with all product guidance notes?

Can you post a link to the product?

  • Wickes may come back and say for that job you should have laid marine ply or similar underneath - unless they are specifically advertising how it should be used/laid then I don't think you have a leg to stand on.
  • Yes I did ask for recommendation from Wickes before purchase, but this was from a member of staff and word of mouth.
No one mentioned about fitting plywood underneath for support as the gap between rafters is not that great.
I am going to right to customer services with photos and see what they say.
What they will not be getting is any further custom.
  • As an ex member of Wickes (left to start up my own company) I know that wickes staff are not trained to give advice on roofing. But i do know that the gap between each beam is to big, as that type of roofing is quite soft and if im not mistaken the manufacturers recommended gap is 1 foot, if not applying a supporting bored under the sheeting. But i could be wrong as it was along time since i was given the info. But give wickes a call and they will ether give you the manufacturers phone number or be able to tell you the required gap.

You can't reject for a refund something you've had installed for several months.

But, you can request they remedy the fault, via repair/replacement/refund - their choice.

If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
I've used these - they are quite bendy even with finger pressure, so do need a lot more support than asbestos or corrugated iron sheets.

Wickes project sheet here http://www.wickes.co.uk/pcat/44roofing (recommended support from boarding to 600mm depending on roof pitch).
