I suspect they may not be cut as such, but could, as under previous Tory governments, be frozen, or somehow "fudged" such that they do not increase in line with inflation or earnings

Not blaming Tories only BTW, it was Labour who, I think, had a 75p rise, or was it less?

I cant see pensions being cut ,but I think other benefits will be cut .
I think more benefits should be means tested .
Family allowance should be means tested .
Tax credits ,give me a break ,you want paid to have children .If you cant afford them dont have them .
I know someone who was offered a better job with more money .
He refused it because he would loose some tax credits .

  • Just to say as regards the above post, that tax credits are not just for those with children, they are also for those in low-paid work.

I personally think only those on a low wage should get them, whether or not they have children. I don't think that people on a decent wage with children should get them.

The problem with means testing universal benefits is that the testing often cost more than the savings made.

Well, back to the original point. In theory the government could do this but given the number of pensioners and near-pensioners there are, and the fact they are more likely to turn out to vote than young people, it's very unlikely. What has happened and probably will continue to happen is that people will have to wait longer to claim their pension - my own other half has seen her expected age to receive her pension increase from 60 to 66 (it will eventually reach 67). This change also affects linked benefits such as pension credit.

It's the youngsters of today who are going to find nothing in the pot when they reach old age.
