Internet Usage Wifi 3G query

Hi chaps, sorry if this has been asked before, but I am in a little bit of a hurry.
With a Wifi mobile phone, when you're browsing the Internet in a Wifi hotspot, the browsing is obviously free. What happens if the Wifi stops (say the cleaning lady accidentally unplugged the wireless router)? Would it automatically switch to 3G (and therefore leave you using your allowance or incurring a charge) or would it stop working?
Can 3G browsing be disabled? I am thinking that the cost of 3G browsing whilst abroad would be sky high and would therefore like to have a Wifi Only option.
Thanks for your help

I have a nokia E51 and have set the browser to ask each time it connects to the internet, I can then choose which connection to use.Know the difference between what you WANT and what you NEED. :T0

I've got a windows mobile phone which goes to gprs if there is no wifi.
I use a program called nodata when I don't want to get charged which allows you to turn off your gprs/3g - http://www.modaco.com/content/pocket-pc-software/246171/new-free-utility-nodata/0 -
No it does't do that.It just quits or it may not perform the task....0
