need a quieter fan for my PC

I have a Dell Vostro 410 with an E7400 2.8GHz processor with 8cm fan, which if these do you think would be suitable? I'm not sure how much airflow it needs:

It also has a 12cm case fan. I'm not sure which is making the most noise at the moment. Would one of these help too?:

  • As a big fan of noctua fans, I say get a pair of them :)

if budget is tight, the redwings are very good for the money!

You might also fins your PSU is on the verge of underpowered, so it's fan may also be a bit on the noisy side :)

  • spaceboy, re fan noise. Stick your finger on the centre of the fan and stall it a few seconds then. Use a plastic ty-rap if it helps.

Would a redwing give enough airflow to the heatsink?
  • I can't remember the numbers, and CBA looking, but I'm pretty sure they throw a lot of air around.

Looking at the site you linked, the 80mm noc throws 31.2 CFM while the redwing moves 19.6 cfm (both at full speed). I'd be surprised if the redwing isn't good enough, but the noc is definitely up to the job.

Obviously changin the CPU cooler in its entirety is possibly going to be better (though more expensive) as stock heat sinks are generally a bit naff :(

How easy is it to change the whole cooler? Do you need to put more of that heat spreader stuff on the processor?

I am sure your PC came with a Q6600 lol, you butchering it again ;)

I would ditch the whole cpu cooler tbh. Go for the Mugen Scyth it is classed as one of the best especially if your planning on eeking out more performance from the CPU. Other wise look out for some of the passive Zalman ones, assuming there is space for one in the case.

I'm sure it originally did have a Q6600 as that's what the Dell order code says it had but when I got it second hand it had an E7400. Not sure why, but the E7400 is decent enough.

As iu asked though are they easy to attach or do you need to put more heat paste stuff on?
  • you need to clean off the CPU and apply fresh paste, many coolers come with a small amount.
As to easy to change...ones requiring a backplate will involve removing the motherboard..so a bit tricky :) Otherwise they just twist+lock in place - very easy (but 'play' with the mechanism so you understand how it works before fitting)

If changing the cooler, remember to use a very small amount of fresh paste, a grain of rice sized blob in the centre of the CPU is generally enough, it's the cooler's job to spread it, not yours :D

Database is right. Arctic freezer 7 is a common cooler, £18~ish.
If you aren't overclocking then just go for quiet.
Get coretemp which will tell you the cpu temps.
Get orthos to stress your cpu -idle 30+ load 70 max.
