What are the deeds?

Options
this may be a very stupid question so apologies in advance.

today I have received from my solicitor a letter stating that registration of our title to the property has now been completed, and enclosing an official copy of register entries from the Land Registry showing that we own the house.

they have also enclosed a number of other documents called "transfers" and "conveyances" relating to the previous sales of the property.

is this the "deeds" or are the deeds something else? is any of this stuff going to be needed in the future given that the LR is now all electronic?

the deeds are the documents which show who owns the house and if there is a mortgage and with who..... the previous transfers, searches, conveyances etc are usually included with these

usually your mortgage company would keep hold of your deeds but since the L/R (and most building societies) went electronic they may not want to keep all the documents (which with older houses can be quite large) so they will keep the originals of the L/R docs that u were sent

the only way u would get ALL your deeds is if u didnt have a mortgage and owned the property outright... i would be inclined to keep a hold of them if only to pass toany new owners

    hope this helps

Deeds are no longer needed once the house has been registered but you may which to keep them purely out of historical interest :)

i find the deeds to my house absolutely fascinating - i plan to pass them onto the next owner. i would certainly keep them just in case there is ever a dispute - the LR occasionally make mistakes or if new documents appear when neighbours properties are sold and registered for the first time.
