Buyer told me off for starting NPB dispute!

I sold an item on enbay last week and contacted the seller straight away to confirm the payment arrangement. They didn't respond, so 2 days later I sent an invoice. A week later after auction closed still no response, but I noticed they had given feedback for another item they had bought at the same time. So I started a NPB. They replied almost immediately saying that I should never have done this, but just emailed them. As it happens, it worked because they have now paid.
But was I being unfair? I seem to have had a spate of buyers not paying at the moment, and I was getting fed up.

I don't think so. I assume they paid by PayPal? I follow exactly the same process. most folk pay straight away so i don't send an invoice until day 2-3 I will follow that with a reminder day 5-6. Followed by NPB day 7-9. The above course of action also assumes no contact from buyer in the meantime to beg me to wait until they have burried the goldfish!
I used to spend a lot of time emailing and calling buyers. Now I just go through the process described...saves hassle.0 -
I do too 7 days is long enough unless I am contacted to say a cheque or postal order is on the way0

Although it could have been a simple oversight on their part. I think they're right and you did file the NPB too quickly when a reminder email could have done the trick. It's all sorted now, so no problem any more, I presume.0

Hi, You done the right thing don't worry! It isn't just coincedence that they paid you straight away is it!
I had a cocky buyer who kept asking questions but said...don't worry I am gonna pay etc.... really irritated me with the emails so I just did a npb ....got the payment and a narky email but some people have to be pushed!! I do give people leway though.. I do say if you have problems with paying or need more time etc
when they get pooey just say you did it to save you losing money and you can cancel at any time without repercussions!

My view would be that as ebay themselves allow an NPB to start on day 7 then it can't be too early to start one at that point.
I do usually allow a little longer myself and maybe send the final reminder on day 7 with the nPB on day 10, but have in the past started an NPB on day 7 where feedback history suggests it might be a good idea.

ebay allow a NPB to be filed after day 7, i usually send an email reminding them this, then if i've still not had any reply from them a couple of days later, file an NPB, that almost always generates a response!
if the buyer just wins the item and does nothing (no invoice , checkout, etc) i usually file the NPB on the 7th or 8th daymoney saving my @rse.
I've spent 10x as much as I would if I had never discovered this website :-)

You allow the buyer 3 days from close of auction for the m to pay then start sending emails and keep a record in case of any problems and then if they fail to respond then file NBP.0

Thanks for the replies everyone. I would normally have given them a couple of extra days, but when I saw that they had been logged in to leave feedback for another purchase, I felt they were trying to get out of paying.0

Once the payment has cleared, ONLY send the item by a traceable method.
This person could start a non performing seller or chargeback if they are a "funny" customer.
