Insurance/Licence Address

Hi,

I'm moving for work for 6 months and have changed my car insurance and V5 to my new address as this is where the car will be kept, do I also have to change my Driving Licence? It's a Northern Ireland Licence and don't really want to change it to an English one just to have to change it back down the line. My home address on my driving licence is my parents house, so I can still get anything sent there.

Thanks

You are obliged to advise change of address. Obviously, you could take a chance and hope ........

  • Cheers, but i don't want to take that chance!

I don't consider the new address as my 'home', as it is only temp. I'm keeping everything else in my home address, including bank accounts etc, so do I really need to change my licence?
  • I'm thinking you'd only need to change your address if it's permanent.

I thought that you only have to change your licence to a UK one if you remain the in UK for more than 1 year, or intend to stay for more than a year. A quick call to the DVLA would resolve it.

That is true, however if you move within the UK you should also change the address so that they have a current point of contact.

In the OP's case, assuming he's in regular contact with his parents/they'll let him know of any letters they receive i'd imagine it's ok (it's basically what a lot of people do when they go to University, they'll leave their parents address as their "home" for the licence).

Insurance is a lot more picky because the risk varies depending on where you're parking most nights:)
  • Thanks for the replies, I'll give my insurer a ring and find out from them, I'm less conserened about the DVLA as it still my 'home'. What I'm worried about is the impact on my insurance.

The issue about changing my licence to a UK one does not exsist, as I already have a full UK licence (Northern Ireland).
