Orange help...Please?

Hi,
The boyfriend has gone to family for the weekend, and wanted internet access. We phoned Orange and were advised that their is network coverage in the area, and that we'd receive up to 7Mbps, but at least 3.6. Was quite happy with this and because we only wanted it for today - Tuesday, added it to my contract for £25 a month () 30 day rolling contract and bought the dongle (£15). This was Christmas Eve, at about 1pm.
Was told the dongle would take 24 hours to activate, and tried it last night, when it wouldn't connect at all. I thought it might be due to our own wireless network here, so boyfriend took the dongle with him. It's found the orange network there, and says connected to Orange GPRS, but is at best at 512kbps and won't load anything but the google homepage.
Obviously it isn't fit for purpose, as we specifically checked if it would work where he was going. He's now left without internet, and I can't get through to anyone at Orange, so I'll have to phone tomorrow.
I'm really not happy, so does anyone have any advice for me? Boyfriend maintains the contract has a cool down period, but I've never dealt with anything like this before.
Thank you!!
Edit - Just checked my bill, and they've added a £2 charge for 24 - 24 dec (the 24 hours in which we were told not to use it, it would be being activated) and £27 for Dec 25th - Jan 25th. This is going out Jan 14th... Doesn't leave me much time. Any advice?)
