Online Banking Passcodes

Arrgghhh.

Abbey have introduced one time passcodes when transferring funds and setting up and amending payments....it is managed via a mobile phone...

I dont have one Abbey say I can still maintain these via telephone banking or in branch....

Does anyone know of any online bank accounts that dont require this??

Thanks

HSBC have a similar system but they allow you to use a landline number or a mobile.

Other banks have started to use card readers.

I saw an advert in the paper a few weeks ago for a £5 mobile phone - worth a punt?

With NatWest you need their card reader.
More banks are introducing these and similar systems to make life "more secure"!!
If you move banks you may find that the system will follow you sooner or later.
What one bank does today other banks will do tomorrow.

I would still suggest HSBC as an viable alternative to Abbey.

My understanding is that Abbey require a code for almost every transaction - for HSBC, its only used if you want to change your personal details online or send money abroad.

As you say, the HSBC system can also be used with landlines (not just mobiles) - unlike Abbey's.

There was a thread on here complaining about the new system Abbey had introduced as some individuals don't have a mobile telephone as they can't get reception and others don't see why they should be forced to buy a mobile just to use a bank account if they don't want too..

I dislike banks which have introduced card readers for internet banking - I'm not convinced they are foolproof and neither are Abbey or HSBC - hence their decision not to have card readers.

  • Thanks guys.....
I'm all for security but Abbey seem to be taking it to the extreme...even if I need to transfer money between Abbey accounts I need to use this.....to external accounts...

    It's just a pain....

    Thanks....

I'll look at HSBC but like you say they are bound to follow suit...plus I have 3 current accounts and 2 savings accounts to move....

Have you experienced this yourself? I am genuinely asking...

I have signed to the OTP and have only come across its need when setting up a new payee on the internet banking system - for tranferring money to pre-existing payees or within my linked accounts, there is no change and OTP does not kick in.
"Part P" is not, and has never been, an accredited electrical qualification. It is a Building Regulation. No one can be "Part P qualified."

I've had an Abbey e-account for some years, but now that they want me to purchase a mobile phone just to move my money around. Have Abbey taken out shares in mobile phone companies?
The only alternative the complaints centre can offer is to ring some 0845 call centre (where English is definitely not the first language) and then spend ages listening to the phone bill racking up.
Looks like Abbey & I are going to part company when I set up a more rational alternative.

    That is exactly my experience.

I have never been asked to use it, as I have not set up a new payee recently or did want to change my contact details. Payments to existing payees go through without a code; equally transfers from Abbey Current to Abbey e-Saver are as instant as they always have been.

By contrast, my Tesco Saver forces me to use the card reader every time, even if I only want to transfer some funds to my registered Abbey account. (That must be a dumb fraudster, who laboriously cracks an account and then transfers funds to the rightful account holder’s other account.)
