What do you mean by "warm-ish"? In January everywhere in Europe is cold. If you want to sunbathe, forget it... On the other hand, it might be good weather for hiking, exploring etc. The BBC website has climate guides for almost every country.

I spent Xmas and New Year in Malta a few years back. It's pot luck with the weather, we had quite a bit of rain but also some nice sunny days, certainly a lot warmer than England. It's great if you like old buildings and history and a ride on a bus is a must. We found some nice places for evening entertainment, live music but laid back and not rowdy. I don't know what the prices are like now though.

I agree very much with your post. I was there for the whole of January last year and it rained 50 per cent of the time but at least it was warm! The rest of the time was certainly short-sleeve weather. Malta is certainly not cheap....meals out are more expensive than the UK and supermarket food is expensive as everything is imported. The pubs are good though (do you remember the days that we had proper pubs in the UK?) with normal people to chat to. Prices are about the same as the UK.

History is fascinating here and lots of museums. Check out the "cart ruts" on google. These are a definite enigma and may not be with us for very long because of erosion and human factors.

If you do go to Malta, take great care with timeshare touts. You have been warned.

Might be worth avoiding Gozo, an island off Malta. It was a long time ago but me and my female friend wondered round on the first night in shorts and the old ladies sat on their doorsteps repeatedly spat on the floor to show their disapproval! It was very, very Catholic.

    Good luck finding somewhere.

Just been to St Pauls Bay in December and it was rather wet, lovely when the sun was shining but as others have said, a bit pot luck really.

If you do choose Malta, make sure you stay in a busy area such as Sliema Bay or St Juliens as the other resorts are much more quiet at this time of year.

I found cheap flights with easyjet and booked my hotel(HB) with travelrepublic.co.uk. There is a transfer company just in arrivals who charged us 20 euros I think for a return transfer for 2. Very good value I thought

  • Hi Malta is a great place to visit if you are interested in history and enjoy museums and tours. We went a couple of years ago (not in january) and did a lot of sight seeing. The people were very helpful and we were well looked after. It was quite reasonablely priced then, but its probably more expensive now.

However I came back from egypt recently and would recommend it to anyone. It was an outstanding holiday, we went on a cruise and saw all the amazing sights, including pyramids, it is probably the best holiday I've ever had. If you can go to egypt for that price, I would jump at it.
