I don't know how much use this is to you, as I'm looking at a different size, but I just bought a 60cm ss cooker hood in B&Q for £50 - what a bargain. I had a chat with a very nice guy in B&Q who (although obviously wanting to sell B&Q stuff) told me that although hobs/ovens vary alot in quality a cooker hood does what it says, though some have brand names on them, and are maybe aesthetically more pleasing (eg the sticky-up bit is welded to the hood and not stuck on afterwards).

I thought £50 was worth sacrificing my aesthetics for :-)

    Hi

LOL! Oh how much simpler life would be if extraction systems were as simple as the B&Q salesperson had described. Actually it couldn't be further from the truth!

Without question the most important appliance in a kitchen is the extractor! Think of it this way, you have just spent several thousands of pounds on your new kitchen with having it all professionally fitted etc. and then you don't fit the proper extractor, all of the grease etc, that is generated while cooking is just going to settle on all your really expensive new surfaces!

Especially when you have a gas hob, extraction becomes even more important, not only do you need to deal with the moisture, grease, heat and smells you are burning a fossil fuel as well!

I don't mean to scare anyone but the cooker hood is so often the last appliance to be thought about in a new kitchen but really should be the first.

Back to your requirements Niall24, ;) You really need an extractor that can change the air in the room around 15 times per hour, so roughly speaking your room is 50m3 so ideally you need an extractor rated at 750m3 per hour, but don't forget that every bit of ducting especially bends reduces the power, so if I were you I would be looking at cooker hoods around 1000m3 per hour.

As a personal preference I would only ever use a cooker hood the same size or ideally wider than the hob underneath. There is no legal requirement for this its just I think a visual thing as I have seen many 1000mm wide range cookers with 900mm cooker hoods over that just look silly.

    Hope this helps.

i'm one of those silly people with a 900 over a 1000 cooker - but mine is a an integrated hood in a chimney (cooker in the chimney breast from the old range) rather than a hood style. I went for the highest extraction rate I could for the amount I wanted to spend - that seems to mean its a bit noiser than ideal but I can't hear the kids fighting so thats all good really!

Other things to consider are if you want recirculating (filters the air and passes it back into the room) or ducting (gets rid of the air). For recirculating you need a charcoal filter, for ducting you need a way for the air to go out. My understanding is that recirculating is less efficient though I could be wrong...

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread but it is very useful... Would anyone recommend a particular manufacture of cooker hood or is the sucking power the most important factor. I've heard Elica mentioned before but would be interested in any more.
