Toshiba BSODs when coming out of stand by

My dad's Toshiba laptop running Vista Home Premium (SP1 not applied yet) generates a blue screen of death (BSOD) when coming out of stand by.
If it's been left unused for a while, it enters stand by, but I've found that using the trackpad, mouse button or space bar doesn't wake it, and I've had to press the mains button gently.
When this happens, it starts up with a black screen, then we get a BSOD (details will be added next time it occurs).
A quick Google search suggests that I may need to run a Registry Cleaner tool on the system in case there are any problems in the Registry, but I am not sure about that at the moment.
SP1 is not installed, so I was going to try installing that and see what happens.
Any other suggestions I can try?

registry cleaner won't help, try changing the power profile so it hibernates instead of suspends.!!

Update the drivers. Power management issues are nearly always drivers.0
