  • Firstly what role the computer is going to be doing determines what spec you need. If it is to be a web server, you need gobs of RAM, fast hard drives running in RAID,Gigabit LAN, a UPS and a decent backup solution. A fast CPU and graphics card is not a requirement.

Building a basic PC is not going to be cheaper than buying one unless you already have some components. Buying the patrs over three months will mean paying P&P on each component which will also bump up the cost.

In my opinion you would be far better off buying a machine off the shelf with a warranty.

Personally if I was in your position I would just go to https://www.dmxdimension.co.uk and get a suitable Dell.

patman99 is it would be legal for a student to buy a copy of Windows 7 and then sell it on?

If iwas running a business the last thing Iwould want would be to use potentially dodgy software.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

It wont be cheaper as has been said, but the learning experience will be worth the extra cost. I have built 3 PC's now and enjoyed the process.
Know the difference between what you WANT and what you NEED. :T

Haynes (the car manual people) now do a computer manual - maybe its worth buying a copy and having a read. But if this is your first build then dont push yourself to a time scale - Any friends you know who can help you out - by that I mean talk you through it - dont let them do it for you while you watch - If you do it yourself with supervision then you may be suprised at how easy it is.
