Dell laptop (Core Solo) very slow when booted from cold but ok booted warm

Hi All

I'm trying to sort out my mum's laptop for her. It's a Dell Inspiron 640m with Intel Core Solo T1350.

When it's booted up from cold it is painfully slow, taking pushing 10 mins to boot up fully and being too slow to use. If I restart at this stage, it takes ages to shut down, but then boots up normally and is fine until the next cold boot. It does the slow running thing 90% of the time from cold boot, but sometimes it's ok straight away.

When it's running slow, Task Manager says the CPU is 100% in use, but nothing seems to be dominating the CPU and the split of usage seems pretty reasonable between Explorer, Kaspersky and so on, but adding up to 100% instead of the usual 5~10% plus 90% System Idle Process.

I have installed I8KFan which monitors temps and fan controls on Dells and runs in the taskbar. This tells me that the CPU is running at full speed (1866MHz) and 100% usage when the slow running occurs, but it registers it as being extremely cold - sub 10degC. When running normally I see temps of 30 - 40 degC.

Therefore I suspect the CPU may be faulty, although I was expecting to see it running extremely slowly rather than cold.

The CPU is an Intel Core Solo (Yonah) T1350 which is a poor man's Core Duo with one core deactivated.

I'm wondering about swapping it for a Core Duo T2400 and see how we get on with that. That should be under £30 from ebay a nice performance upgrade too, although this is probably unnecessary for the type of usage the laptop gets.

Do you agree that this is a good course of action or should I try something else first?

Cheers,

Jamp

Might as well check the obvious things first ~

Download MALWAREBYTES (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
Open malwarebytes and goto UPDATE and click 'check for updates'. After its updated goto SCANNER and click PERFORM FULL SCAN then click SCAN
Post the log COMPLETE here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds

    reboot

Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)

I'm wondering about swapping it for a Core Duo T2400 and see how we get on with that

^That's a very nice and powerful processor  What's your existing Ram like? Also, what operating system?

Win XP SP3 and only 1GB of PC2-5200 but I think that's adequate for the laptop's usage - it's just for email, light web browsing and word processing really. Performance is fine when it's running right.
  • wow - SP1 not installed yet? might as well bite the bullet and install SP2
Once that's done see if the problem persists...with the service packs designed to fix known issues and vulnerabilities it's generally a good idea to use them

Agreed  And upping the ante on the processor front is an astute move, esp. if you can install yourself - sometimes tricky on a laptop.

DBError - why would I install service packs for Vista when running XP?

Yes, Busen, I'll have to look into how easy it is to get at the processor in these Inspirons.

Id definitely uninstall ZONEALARM SPY BLOCKER (Also known as the ASK toolbar or sometimes as ASKBARDIS)
    Also the canon toolbar

Id also run the NORTON REMOVAL TOOL (Google it) just to make sure its completely gone

    Download CCLEANER
    http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds/downloading-slim
Run the CLEANER scan (UNTICK 'cookies')
Then run the REGISTRY scan (Backup the registry when it asks)

    reboot

    Download GLARY UTILITIES
    http://www.glaryutilities.com/download/gusetup_slim.exe
    Run the ONE CLICK scan
Goto MODULES / SYSTEM TOOLS / WINDOWS STANDARD TOOLS / then run SYSTEM FILE CHECKER

Aside from that, the only thing I could recommend is reformatting and starting afresh
