Epson printer ICC profiles

I have been getting very dark pictures from my epson r300 for no apparent reason, (they have been fine untill now), i use Photoshop CS2 to clean up and manipulate my pictures before printing.
I have read that you can set a profile for the printer/ink/paper used to get perfect prints (ICC profile), but it costs a lot to get this , anyone got any pointers or help with this, or is this wrong.
I have downloaded the latest drivers for my printer (made no difference), and have read loads of stuff off photoshop. When i see the picture i want to print out in the print previewbox it is exactly how it prints it out,(dark) but not how it is in CS2 (perfect) so the problem is when the picture goes from CS2 to the printer software.I am thinking that the printer is seeing the picture different to CS2.If i select the ( let photoshop determine colors( i am then able to select or enter my own profile -ICC profile), if i knew what it was. There are some default settings in there to choose from, but there are to many to try out each one and it may be that none of them are any good.
Suggestion/help gratefully accepted..
