Help with a broken washing machine - Argos

Hi there,
About a year and a half ago, my father in law purchase a washer/dryer for us from Argos.
Recently the machine is getting stuck on a hot wash - ie, put it on a 40degree wash and the machine is getting much hotter, steam pouring out of the machine and shrinking/dying clothes.
I believe that under the Sale of Goods Act (amended) that the machine has to last a responable amount of time (4-5 years?).
The machine was purchased on an Argos store card - however we have lost the receipt. Although I'm sure they will be able to find it on the system.
Can anyone give advice on the best course of action to get the machine repaired/replaced? We have a 2 year old and a 5 week old - so having no washing machine is abit of a disaster - especially over the festive bank holidays!! Is it Argos we pursue, or Indesit?(Makers of the machine)
Any advice or comments are very much appreciated!
Thanks in advance and Merry Christmas!

Have you checked whether it's still under warranty?0

You purchased from Argos, so pursue Argos under SoGA as "not of merchantable quality"
You will have to get an independent report to confirm the fault, and assuming it is a manufacturing fault, Argos will have to pay for this, do not do this until you ave contacted Argos and they tell you they are not liable,(which they most likely will).
You have no redress against Indesit.
You will need some form of proof of purchase!Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -
It's outside of warranty, but still within 5 years parts warranty.
However bearing in mind we have a baby with colic, and need a washing machine - plus the washing machine has been used alot in the year and a half we have had it - should I just cut my losses and get a new one?0 -
First lesson - never EVER buy a washer dryer.
Second lesson: Neve EVER buy indesit anything.
Cut your losses and get yourselves a decent washing machine, Bosch is recommended by me anyway.
You can get a tumble dryer second had for next to nothing in the freeads.
I had a washer dryer it died 5 times in its first year.
good luck!Mum of several with a twisted sense of humour and a laundry obsession:o

Best bit of advice I can give is to go to the top - twice I've written to CEO's office about goods not being of mechantable quality (sofa and xbox) and twice I've had a full refund within a week, after spending months messing about with the local store and so called 'customer service'.Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree!0
