LCD monitor as HD TV

Currently I use a CRT monitor at 1600 x 1200 for DTP work, and at lower resolutions for browsing, emails, usenet, programming and spreadsheets etc. and for viewing TV via a Hauppage TV tuner card - on a computer originally assembed in 2000, and also (for DTP) from a laptop.

I'm thinking of getting a 1600 x 1200 LCD monitor, and since that is more than capable of full HD resolution, having an inbuilt tuner such as the Samsung T260HD or T240HD seems sensible, but I'd lose the TV-in-a-window facility when I retire the computer. Is this the best way to do it?

I guess a lot depends on how critical the TV in a window is to you.

I personally would have a problem with the size of screen that you are looking at (particularly the 26" one) because most people could not use that on a desk as a monitor and still conveniently be able to get far enough away to watch it as a TV in full screen mode.

I'm also not sure that it is worthwhile going to the expense of HD on a 24" or 26" monitor, as IIRC that is below the size at which it is possible to perceive the difference between SD and HD - but perhaps someone can correct me on that.

    Thanks for the reply.

I've got into the habit of having the TV on in a corner of the screen while working on the computer, until something worth concentrating on comes on. I could use a separate TV, or a TV card or dongle; I am just considering my options.

I don't actually have my monitor on a desk, and change my position as my eyesight dictates

I don't understand getting a larger screen and then sitting further away.

As to the HD, it's the 1200pixel vertical height as a computer monitor that interests me. Having HDTV would just be a bonus.
