Be persistant if it's what you really want. After the recent budget, we should be encouraged to start small businesses, make a living for ourselves. Fingers crossed for you.
I have a good job, and only work 30 hrs a week, so I was going to do this either at night or at the weekends. Its to help get a deposit on a house. I prob should have just got my health and hygeine certificate, and my insurance and be done with it. But I wanted to do it right.
The girl on the phone yesterday said that if selling to cafes I would have to label everything as well. Not sure if they are saying this to put me off or if its correct.
Im only going to be selling cupcakes. Not using cream on the topping, so there is no need for it to be stored in a fridge. I do a Victoria Sponge cupcake and it also has butter icing rather than cream so no need for that to be refrigerated either.
I am desperate to give this a go, but just seem to be pushed back in my efforts, it gets to be rather depressing.Saving 2.00 coinsGrocerys set to 40.00 pwBeing Thrifty0 -

I'm currently looking into baking from home. So far I have the forms from the council and a load of leaflets they sent me. I didn't get an inkling either way from the person I spoke to on the phone.
I'm starting a 10 week cake decorating course in August, so hopefully I'll learn something useful from that.
Has anyone contacted theri mortgage provider or home insurer before starting up? I heard there may be issues with this, and also I read somewhere that they may be getting charged business rates on their property becuase of their cake business .
Oh and has anyone that runs a cake business got pets? And what is the EH view on them? I also read that you couldn't cater from a kitchen with a washing machine in it?0 -

I'm also worried about the pet thing, I have a dog and there's no way I can keep him out of the kitchen all the time, he has to go though it to get to the back yard.
Don't understand why having a washing machine would affect anything?
I'm also a bit worried because I rent, do you think my LL could stop me from diong it?
I think I will contact my council and get as much info as possible, if they say I can't do it because of the dog, i'll have to forget the idea:heart: Think happy & you'll be happy

I've recently been selling cakes to people I work with and now that they know i'm selling, quite a few people have ordered cakes. I've done loads of cupcakes. Got 2 orders for graduation cakes for friends kids, and a few kids birthday cakes. I've spend a small fortune on kit, cake boxes etc, so not making any profit at the moment, but as it's my hobby, it's great that i'm starting to claw back the money i've spent. I work full time so have to fit it in when the kids have gone to bed ! I don't think i'll ever make a full business of it as i'd have to be selling 4 cakes a day to make enough to give up work, but I love doing it. Good luck to everyone.0 -
I have to phone this guy in the morning again, but he reminds me of Pheobe's boyfriend in friends, and I dont think he is interested in having me do it from home. I dont want to look at doing it from catering kitchens, because that will eat into any profit I might actually get.
So for those of you that are doing it just now, have you all passed muster, or are you hiding under the radar? just interested to know how you all got on.
I had a look at cake boxes and they are really expensive for the cupcake variety, has anyone found them cheaper?
Thanks againSaving 2.00 coinsGrocerys set to 40.00 pwBeing Thrifty0 -
Hmm... haven't posted in a while...
Hayley11 and Essex girl my sugarcraft teacher runs her business from home and managed to get passed for environmental health, so its definitely possible! In terms of running your business from home you need to check with your landlord as you may be prevented from running a business from home, check you tenancy agreement!
Anyway on the baking front I've FINALLY costed for cupcakes! Was meant to be doing an order on Friday but the order has been cancelled and I've bought most of the ingredients... luckily I'm have another order to do so I shouldn't lose to much money although from now on I will take a deposit to cover my ingredients and time!
How's everybody been doing on the baking front?0 -
Can I post a picture of my cake when i've done it and see what you guys think? It would be great to get comments from other bakers:heart: Think happy & you'll be happy
