Mozilla Thunderbird and email

Hi guys. I have Thunderbird set up on my laptop and I have one of my hotmail accounts set up in it, which I use for many of my websites and also entering some of the comps on here.

However, having logged into it seperately via a webpage recently, I have realised that any 'junk' mail is not coming through to Thunderbird - I essentially could have missed out on WEM's :(

A techie friend of mine told me that hotmail is not the best email client to use with thunderbird due to this. So I would like to set up an email address to use in thunderbird, purely for comping. How do I do this so that both accounts are still in thunderbird? Also, what is the best (free) email client to go for? Need to make sure the junk mail will be downloaded.

Thanks in advance! :)
