I agree with the looking for work in the mean time. If you get in touch with your uni disability services they're always looking for people to be notetakers and helpers, it's pretty well paid (above min wage). Then you could also look for some evening work in a bar or something.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.
  • Thank you all so much for the encouragement. I am going to really try to commit to saving. I know that when I have a job I'll be able to cover debts rent etc no problem but i know that once i get more money i'll end up spending loads mroe than i should so the quicker i get this into control the better. I am going to start a spending diary. I just need to make sure i commit. Thank you for your help.
  • To be honest, it doesn't look that bad. Your income is slightly above your expenses so you can hold your head above water.

OK, so you've got the overdrafts but you're a student and its to be expected. The idea being that you repay them when you get a job.

If you're trying to leave University debt free then I can see why you've got some concerns but to be fair, as you're treading water now, albeit with a little help, then as soon as you get some part time work you'll be able to make serious in-roads to that overdraft.

As for controlling the spending, sometimes it needs a period with "hand to mouth" living to refocus you on just how little you need to spend and how much is frivolity.

I'm sure you'll come out OK from all of this.
  • Can you play guitar or paint? When my wife and I were skint students from 1990-94 (still skint now by the way) I played instrumental guitar music as a busker in the centre of Aberdeen outside Marks and Spencers, and my wife painted large stretched canvas paintings - also in the same location. On a Saturday we could make a fair few pennies between us and we also did it from time to time during the week if the weather was ok. It never made us rich by any stretch of the imagination but helped us both to get through University with a lot less debt than we would otherwise have had. Definately worth doing if you have the talent - you do have to have the talent though because if you don't the punters will recognise that what you are doing is rubbish and not give you any cash. Good luck and best wishes with your phD
  • Wow thanks for the quick reply. Basically my medical bills include travelling. I have to see a therapist who is quite far away.
I know nothing about banks or overdrafts or anything like that. And also i dont really have much family. My father is already helping me out with my rent. The thing is, I have nothing apart from the cash until my next paycheque. My paycheque is half of what it should be because I asked for an advance in December. I will start looking for a job in January. I think I am just panicing.

If your therapist is at a hospital you should be able to ask for help from the hospital hardship fund. They used to be called the almoner. If you contact the hospital they will be able to tell you how to go about it. If your therapist is private and a long way away, you might need to talk to him or her about transferring to a nearer one...

If this were done then it would free up a chunk of money that would make your life a little easier
  • Heya, thats a really good idea about the therapist but I have asked her and shes refusing as I am already getting a cheap rate.
I am trying to tutor people.... but had to stop because i had to finish up my thesis and had to focus on that.
You are all right -as soon as I get another job I will be fine. xxx

My BIL did a phd and was paid well whilst studying. Are you not aswell>>?
    You income looks totally incorrect.

I am sure, even to begin, IT WAS £24k+ and rose each year, which is more than many families have to live on, let alone a single student.

It varies from institution to institution and subjects too...my Phd would have paid 12k, or 6k plus paid teaching work.

Our greatest weakness lies in giving up; always try just one more time

Dont be so quick to judge... many PHds, especially international students, dont get anywhere near that. I know that at the LSE where I did my Masters, if you were one of the very small handful of PHd students that got funding 'from the school you got only about £12k a year, and if you werent in that very small group then you got nothing at all! Indeed, many students need to pay large fees every year.

  • it was 12k for each year 3years. But its way past 3 years now. So thats why i am running low. I have had jobs etc but because i had to focus on writing up and i became severly depressed i had to stop working.
