Get rid of used fridge/freezer

Options
Hi, I am planning on ordering a new fridge freezer next week and am wondering what to do with the old one.
I think that when a new f/f is delivered you are advised not to plug it in for 24 hours, which means that getting the old one removed at the same time will not be practical unless I junk all the fridge and freezer contents. Not very MS.
So.....what are my options? The present appliance is a largish 4 year old Whirlpool silver f/f, fully working but with a few minor scratches and a noisy motor.
Is it worth approaching local second hand electrical shops and seeing if they will take it for a nominal fee?
Other options....
Ebay?
Freecycle
Council collection
Leaving it in front garden and see who takes it!

What has everyone else done in these circumstances??

Freecycle - is likely to go really quick
  • There s homebrew beer forum HERE and a lot of people are crying out for second hand fridges to brew in.
Try posting it up there you might even get paid a fiver, depending on the condition.

freecycle it. all our old white goods went on there.
every single one went very quickly.
    Get some gorm.
  • Thanks for above. I am already a keen user of Freecyle ( or Freegle ), but I suppose I was hoping to get something for the machine even if only a few quid, as it is a pretty new appliance.
    Oh well, freecycle it is....

I'm not convinced by the let stand for 24 hours argument. I've always ignored it over continuous house moves and never had any problems. Anyone care to explain the reasoning behind it and the downsides to ignoring that advice?

Paddy I think you must have missed my earlier post.

The people here at JIMS will PAY you for a fridge if its in good nick, they convert them into temperature controlled cabinets to brew beer in.

They are a nice friendly bunch, drop them a post on the forum.

I got a new frost free fridge freezer from Currys last week. They told me not to turn it on for 4 hours. They take your old one away. I didn't have them take mine as it's in good shape - just too small. I'd like to get something for it too...

Hi i sold ours, put it in the garage and left it there..obviously if you dont have one thats no good but if you can store it or put an ad in saying available from xx that will help..they tend to go fairly quickly.

We have a new one, the first one we plugged in straight away and was fine..unfortunatly we needed another due to other probs and left the second one for the alloted time and we had probs with it! the latest one we have plugged in and ok so i dont believe the waiting thing but each to their own.
