just wondering if anyone has had one of these fitted to their combi boiler. Has it made any difference to the boiler and how much did it cost to get it fitted.

British Gas charge £250 to fit one.

ive got a bid on one on ebay for about £70 so was wondering how much a gas fitter would charge to fit it.

I would have thought you would need a plumber to fix something into a pipe that carries water.

Do you need an RGI to fit a Magnaclean?

Why would you need a Magnaclean?

We had some sludge, which meant the radiators weren't so hot.
About four years ago, we drained the system, unscrewed and flushed the radiators with a garden hose, put some inhibitor in the loft header tank, and it's been fine ever since. We took the opportunity to add thermostatic valves and replaced the second valves too. It's a two man job to remove a radiator, and took a day to do a five bedroom house. The new parts were a few litres of inhibitor fluid, radiator valves, thermostatic valves for the radiators.

Your sludge will probaly stay exactly where it is if you don't flush it out.
the Magnaclean looks like it just filters whatever comes its way.
I would spend the £250 on a chemical power flush if you can't be bothered to do the radiators individually. Make sure you put inhibitor in: it's a sneaky way of job creation for some plumbers.

By the way, the return valve on the nearest radiators to the pump should be less open, otherwise the hotwater returns to the boiler via the shortest path, and the far radiators never get the hot water.

If course not, anyone competent in draining the radiators and cutting the central heating hot water pipe to add a couple of connectors can do it.

I have one of these and they really work. I had a new boiler fitted, which included a power flush. Despite the power flush, after running the boiler for an hour the magnaclean had a half inch layer of sludge clinging to it. I just clean it out under the tap now once a year, which takes 1 minute using the isolation taps before unscrewing it from its case.

Oh and yes I have an inhibitor in my system.

I know that - not sure silky does. The conversation goes like this:

Suki "I would get my local gas fitter out"

    Me "Why"

    Suki "Why what?"

Me "do you need an RGI to fit one"

    That clearer?
