It may be too late for the company to cancel the DD as the instruction may have already been sent to your bank.

If thats the case let them take DD as normal and ask the bank to cancel it and recall the funds on the day the DD debits your account.

Have you checked the money hasnt already debited your account. The only reason I say this is because on my online banking with natwest ive had DDs Leave my account on xmas day dated for the 29th.
Im an ex employee RBS Group
However Any Opinion Given On MSE Is Strictly My Own
  • Oddly theres nothing in my account to suggest its due to go out tomorrow, can't see anything in my due DD's.
  • even if its on the drive you need to have insurance on it, regardless of whether its taxed or not its not a case of oh i wont insure it til i need to drive it you do have a 14 day cooling off period of which you will be able to cancel at no cost to yourself but i either stay with them or find a new company tonight or are being very silly not have insurance on it

Not only are you oblivious to the presence of the full stop key on your keyboard, your advice is wrong. There is no obligation to have a 14 day cooling off period on an insurance renewal.

  • Why dont you search for insurance to start tomorrow try and do it before 12pm (a lot of companies expire at that time). Call Admiral advise you dont want to renew and you may get asked for proof of alternative cover then send them your new documents and you may not get charged. If they are not open then call and offer to send them when they are next open then you may not get charged.

If you are paying DD if its monthly then they have to give you notice on the 1st DD coming out. In your case it may not come out until your actual DD date or 2 weeks after your renewal to give you time to stop the policy... Some insurers also offer that!
I like to think I can help but its for discussion purposes only so if I get it wrong please feel free to correct me.

1st - There is no need to be so rude,
2nd - As i work for an insurance company so funnily enough know what i'm talking about. (there's your full stop) most company in the UK will offer a 14 day cooling off period
3rd - I never said they have a on obligation - instead of picking up on people grammer when they are only trying to give an opinion and some advice try reading what is written

You do NOT need to have insurance for a vehicle parked on your private land.
It's a risk if you don't because it could be stolen or catch on fire, but there is no legal obligation to have it.
If you have a garage you should consider clearing space in the garage to reduce the risk of theft or put a wheel clamp on it etc.

or brakes could fail, roll off your drive killing a mother and baby and damaging cars in the process leaving you with the millions of pounds of liability. Merry Christmas ;)

BTW, cancelling the direct debit does not cancel the requirement to pay the insurer. They will just come after it in a month or so with a higher amount and probably sell it to a recovery company.

You should phone the insurer Monday (in case they are open) or Tuesday and tell them you dont want to renew. Because of the number of days they were not open for business before the renewal date, they should not have a problem. If they do, then tell them that is not your fault that they were not open for the last 4 days and that you will complain to the FOS saying that they are not treating you fairly ( Treating Customer Fairly- TCF - is an FSA thing which is worth quoting if you are considering making a complaint).

I suspect they will allow anyone phoning on Tuesday to cancel renewals that were due whilst they were closed to cancel without charge.
