iTunes account - no card?

Is there any way to set up an iTunes account without inputting credit/debit card details? I'm after the free downloads and don't want to give away my card details when they shouldn't be required. 
I tried creating an account after hitting the "buy" button next to a free app and whilst I got the payment option of "none" originally, I was then asked for my card details.
I'm using v7 btw.

Worked for me yesterday, as I could not see a way to do it (iTunes v 9.0.2.25)0 -
does not appear to have the no card option now when you go to create an accountI am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.0
