My solution, which doesn't involve any fiddling about with the innards of the PC, would be to use a Live CD.
Boot up from the CD, it runs in your PC's RAM and from there you can access the files on the hard drive and transfer them to your USB drive.
Best of all, it's completely free, other than the cost of a blank CD.
Nice idea but :lesley2004 wrote: »Hi
My dell pc has finally decided to die it is 3 years old. It has had problems on and off over past year and now when switched on a solid orange light appears and no other activity.
A live cd will be no help here.
If you are going to buy a new Pc then first have a look inside the old pc and determine if the old hard drive is a IDE (Large rectangular cable ) or a sata (small usually around 1cm in width cable which is red usually)
Then all you need to do is buy a PC with either a spare Sata or IDE connector then you can just plug in the old drive in to the new without the caddy.lesley2004 wrote: »Have decided to try a caddy but not until I have bought a new pc as I dont want to have problems with my internet connection and the router is connected to the pc and still working
The Router is independant of your computer, the cable which conects your computer to your router is a Cat5 cable which just passes information backwards and forwards. you can safley remove this cable annd your internet will still work for all other computers in the house.0 -
Fixing the old one would probably be much cheaper.!!
