Cheap taps. showers etc on Internet

  • Yes, I would say a Miele will last 21+ years, my Miele oven is 21 years old and still like new!

Talking taps etc here.....I would only buy branded goods on line, then, as said, you are comparing oranges with oranges. That is the only fair way to make a comparison.

In our house we have Armitage Shanks taps, and sanitary ware, also Ideal Standard sanitary ware, and Aqualisa showers. They are all now over 21 years old and have given very few problems in that time (last year we had to replace one of the shower thermostatic cartridges). It is worth getting decent branded goods if you want them to last.
  • Check out taps in the shops, note the name then do a search on Ebay, I paid half the price for my kitchen tap by ordering from the internet, same with door handles and I got cashback by using Quidco. Obviously check the sellers feedback etc.

oh and my kitchen fitter had no problems using/fitting the taps I bought.
  • we have just bought some very well priced kitchen taps from the internet with free next day del and free returns (screwfix, apparently part of the b&q group but you couldnt tell from the price!!!) - they are branded and have a 10 year finish warranty!!!!

You just have to hunt around and do your research.

I've had customers who have bought taps from Screwfix and they have been fine and good value. I've had customers who have bought taps from Ebay and I couldn't necessarily say the same. One was made so badly I refused to fit it.

    Quite.

Absolutely the correct decision. Otherwise the customer thinks its your fault when it doesn't work properly.

Most of Screwfix taps are they own Morretti brand, These are cheap and nasty tat....Try getting spares from Screwfix, They say there cant

Stick with branded items, For lower end i would suggest Bristan and you should be able to get approx 40% off RRP. These are mostly british made, Heavy weight brass

Screwfix are Swirl brand mainly, as the cheap end, mostly ok, but not very hardwearing.
Bristan has a uk warehouse, not sure about uk manufacturing though, but they are usually a good product. Been a bit hit and miss recently though.
    Spares are well supported.

Thanks for the replies, guys and gals.

All of the cheap showers and taps I have looked at on Ebay and online plumbing supplies have no brand. Some do have ten year guarantees, though how one would draw on such in 8 years time I have no idea. Mind you, even a named brand could go out of business.

I've got a plumber's merchant to price match the internet. I had printouts of everything and said I'll buy everything off you (taps, basin, WC, shower) if you price match from all the different stores. I added delivery (most of the internet ones charge £20 upwards)

We have bought branded stuff online without any real problems but I wouldn't buy unbranded online or offline as I personally dont think its worth the risk of them failing. We did also get a local bathroom place to do a price match with an online price for some bits when we were buying some other bits from them so its always worth asking.
