incorrect bill and advice reqd

In brief i had a bill for £147 plus gas from edf. i was expecting £90 plus . i checked my meter and according to the last 2 bills not only did they change the meter no' but moved it to cubic feet to boot in approx august this year. In fact the meter according tothe bumpf written on it says it was installed in 2004.(it is an outside meter) So obviously i will ring them up and query the bill. But what i think has been happening is that they have been sending me a bill for meter no' 8
for all these years and it appears that s.o. turned up in august realised this was the wrong number, corrected it but for some strange reason changed the reading from m3 to f3 although it is always been m3.
My question it may only be technical, but if for 5 years i have been getting bills for meter no' 8
and not 1
, Is this illegal billing ? and would i be able to claim the money back ? I realise this could only be a techincal question as i dont dispute the readings for all these years,just the actual meter no' itself. they might refund me on one meter and demand the same amount back from the genuine meter !
Also how come they just altered everything without telling me anything in a letter? Did they just hope that i would not notice ?- i would not have except the fact that they have moved me to feet3 instead of m3 .

Are you saying that you have billed on the basis of having a metric meter when in fact the meter was imperial.?That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
no- the meter has not been changed for at least 5 years.
i was being billed for meter no' 8
(incorrect). and up till the last bill i was being billed metric ( correct.) Now i am being billed imperial.
and i am now being billed for meter no' 1
