Wireless USB Adaptor Problem

I have an adaptec AWN-8020EU USB wireless adaptor for my computer, which I use generally to link up to my laptop (Netgear PCMCIA card). This is so that I can share my broadband connection.
However, every so often (and sometimes more often than not >:() the wireless connection is dropped for no apparent reason, which then returns only when I reboot (this can happen on the laptop or desktop, but mainly desktop). Sometimes if I happen to be logged in to the desktop with the above kit, when I check it states that the USB Device has not been recognised - despite the fact it was happy to recognise it seconds earlier!
Does anyone have any ideas? All my drivers are up to date and it is driving me to distraction.

Any thoughts welcomed - have spent ages this evening running up and down stairs as the Adaptec on my desktop was not picking up the signal ???.
