Business use vs SDP&C question...

Hello guys (and Merry Christmas!), can anyone shed some light on this for me:

I'm a named driver on my mam's full comp policy - have been since I passed in april/may 06. I'm starting a new job soon and will be driving the car a bit more - 4 days a week about 15 miles a day if not less (and for a while i'll have no main workbase as such but i'm not in sales or anything and I wont be driving people about etc).

Current insurers say to insure me for business use (they didn't say which class) mam has to change the car to my name as well as the policy and it'll cost in excess of £800 a year.

So I looked on comparison sites and they give the option for business insurance for both the registered and named driver, and they came in at about £380 upwards.

So what's right?? I know circumstances are always different but would my mam actually have to change the car to my name even though i'll be doing less milage than she does for her SDP driving?

We are both covered for SDP & Commuting, am just a tad confused & concerned as I won't have one single place of work for a while (i'll be going into support work in education & training) and I may have to drive to the occasional meeting so I dont want to void the insurance by having wrong cover!

Thanks for any info!

Jem

You need full business use cover. Commuting is for a single place of work and you will not be traveling to a single place of work.

If your mother is still using the vehicle for the majority of the miles and time it is driven then the policy can still be in her name. If you will be using it for the majority of the miles/time then the policy needs to have you listed as the MAIN driver but otherwise the policy and vehicle ownership can be in her name.

If may, therefore, be cheaper for you this year to cancel mid term and change providers, but you need to consider the full costs of doing this regards NCD build up etc.

In my policy it does not define commuting. I believe commuting to more than one work place would be OK. I would suggest OP's mum asks her insurer.
