USB Wireless Adaptor wont install

Hi,

After continual problems with my pci wireless card I decided to get a Netgear USB adaptor.

I downloaded the driver and then disabled the pci card in device manager, installed the usb adaptors software, plugged in, but windows unable to find right driver.

I am positive I installed the correct software so is this problem because its conflicting with the pci card software?

I have tried uninstalling the pci software but still have the same problem.

I am running windows xp pro, will the only solution be a reinstall???

Did you reboot after installing it? is it a WG111V2? They come with a CD..

Have you unplugged it and put it into a different usb port since you installed the software?
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

it seems you arent alone out there. Loads of people have had the same problem Heres some information taken from another forum. Perhaps it will help.

By the way, you should try disabling your firewall on both computers if you have two and also disable the anti-virus as well, then try and install the software before you try anything else. Remember to enable the firewall and anti-virus afterwards.

Problem solved in a different way!

I encountered the same problem as scmf when installing the Netgear WG111v2 USB adapter on a relative's PC. The solution suggested by Rebel58 didn't work though and I got the same error message as before - "An error occurred during the installation of this device.
The system could not find the file specified".

So as a last resort I connected the PC to the router using a network cable to allow the add new hardware wizard to connect to Windows Update to find the device driver (I did say this was a last resort!).

Anyway it worked and the USB wireless adapter is now successfully installed and working.

I don't think it had a bearing on the successful outcome but I'll mention anyway. During the installation process I uninstalled Norton Internet Security and reinstalled it after successful installation of the USB adapter. Admittedly not best practice as the PC was connected to the internet without a firewall for 30 seconds as the driver was being downloaded.
:confused:I have nothing better to do!!!!
