Burglar Alarm Wake Up Call

Merry Christmas! Ours didn't get off to a good start as our burglar alarm went off at 7:05 this morning despite the fact it wasn't set. The external bell was ringing but there were no entry/exit warning lights lit up on the alarm panel.
I set and reset the alarm but couldn't stop it so I phoned our insurance co to see if we were covered for a call out under Home Emergency but obviously not. By that time - about 20 mins - the alarm had stopped.
I suspect the back up battery in the alarm panel or the battery in the bell box is going flat as the alarm did sound a bit strained and the alarm hasn't been serviced in more than 15 years.
As it stopped ringing we've left it as we really don't want to call someone out on Christmas Day. I don't understand these things and couldn't get to the bell box myself as it's about 20ft off the ground and I have a fear of ladders and heights so I'm going to need someone to look at it.
Just hope the battery is completely flat so it doesn't ring again and we can get it sorted in the new year cos we don't want to keep waking the neighbours. Is it likely the battery is flat now and the alarm won't ring again or can we expect it to keep going off randomly until we get a new battery?
Finally any ideas on how much I should be paying to get the alarm sorted and to have a sensor fitted to an external door - wiring already in place?
Thanks a lot

Was there a power cut or power surge by any chance as these can set alarms off?
(You can often tell if there was a power cut as your video or dvd clock will be showing the wrong time)0 -
No obvious sign of any power cut or surge as all clocks correct and no electrical items restarted.0
