Hi,
I bought a pork loin from the farmers market on sunday, use by 25/12/09
It's been sat in a plastic bag in my fridge all week apart from the 2 hours it took us to get home in the snow (right at the back of bottom shelf)
I've just got it out and it smells funny but I've don't know what it's supposed to smell like (not used to cooking meat). I don't know if it's just the juices it's been sat in the bag.
What does raw pork smell like and how do I know if it's off

Thanks

  • It's very difficult to describe. Does it smell nasty or just funny?

Have you got a neighbour you could pop in and ask?

It's a funny sweaty smell rather than eggy nasty. I just realised that it's a bit like when you go into a butchers and it smells really strongly (or to me at least) so I think it might be just a raw meat smell.

I'd give it a rinse and cook it. Meat often smells a bit when it's been wrapped.

That's probably it - just rinse it and it'll be fine.
You should wash pork anyway they use a lot of salt in the prep.

    Thank you
Given it a wash, I still think it smells but it's partner who's eating it so it's his own fault if he poisons himself!

As someone who's just reared a pig for pork, I can say that there's no salt used in the preparation of pork :p Are you thinking of bacon

Meat does sometimes smell funny when you open it...as long as it doesn't look funny or smell of eggs then you wll be ok. I had a rotten chicken once and i definately knew it was off, there was no doubt.

How does rearing ONE pig qualify you to say what pork producers do?

As someone who has just looked at half a dozen fresh pork joints on a major supermarket web site, I can say they all had salt added.
