  • I suppose a good spec is anything over 2.6GHz such as a P4 Prescott or AMD Sempron or AMD 64bit.

Ram you probably want a minimum of 512 (2x256 sticks rather than 1x512 as this is generally accepted as faster). 1 gig is always nice thou =)

For future proofing ideally you want a motherboard with PCI-E rather than AGP.
  • what is a decent spec nowadays?

In my experience the answer to that is always the same.

    About 200 quid more than I can afford. :P ;D ;D ;D

    HI Paul,

Firstly---do not waste money on buying much more than what you can use---the same spec will be available for much less in 2 years time--when you need it.

I would recommend 2500 AthlonXP--or 3 GHZ P4 (pentiums are better than p4), 512 MB ram--as one stick--not 256x2 unless using an Nvidia motherboard, 160GB hard drive, DVD writer--16x Dual Layer, etc.

For VIZ: see Aria.co.uk and see their specials--they have a very decent one for 470.

for using spreadsheets and work etc a pentium 2 or 3 would do in my mind.(using windows98) .not the fastest of processors but should be able to cope with that graphics for games etc will take the most memory up
Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!
