There is an algorithm used to produce the numbers and the play system will check the number is correct but not if its exists.
As long as you not paying for an item this is perfectly fine
They actually seem to put through a 1p transaction to double check the card details with each and every order, free or not (they don't take the penny - but obviously just ringfence it to see if the address matches the card).
They've done the same with the £5 off vouchers in the past too.0 -
