Their cameras are usually travelstar branded. Brother bought the 7 megapixel one last time and although it looks great value at first especially with the accessories I found the optics lacking and the operation in low light less than perfect. It was also quite fussy with certain 1gig SD cards I tried in it.

I have the 4mp one from about 3 years ago. The optics in that are superb, the camera was actually made by Minox who have been regarded as a top brand for decades. However you are right about the operation in low light, performance is very poor even with flash. It is also quite slow, both in operation and in the time it takes to save the images to the card. At the time I bought it though there was absolutely nothing else to touch it for the price (£199).ShopperHolic wrote:Their cameras are usually travelstar branded. For most people 8mp is way over the top, if you are only making 6x4's or posting pics on the web 3 or 4mp is more than adequate. I rarely set my camera to more than standard quality, which is 2mp, and I am always satisfied with the pictures, it depends what you are going to do with them.
For anyone thinking of buying a camera I would suggest looking at cameras in a local shop before buying the Aldi one, taking some advice from them and getting them to show you some prints made at various resolutions, preferably from the camera you are thinking of buying. Unless you really really need 8mp I think it would be wiser to buy a brand such as Pentax, Olympus, Nikon etc with a lower mp but better all round performance and a higher optical quality. You may also find it possible to save a bit of money by buying lower mp's.

Curry's have 3 Fuji, a Samsung & an Olympus all high quality & for £99-00. They also have a Panasonic 6MP with 6X Optical zoom for £202-00. I mention the Panasonic as about a month ago I got the Panasonic 10X Optical zoom & it is the best camera I've had by far. I've had Fuji, Kodak, Nikon, Canon, (All great cameras apart from the Kodak). I wouldn't diss the Aldi camera as many of these offers are good value but I myself would stay with the main brands.Nice to save.0

Its the megapixel game yet again
Do not be fooled! Mega-pixel dont mean mega-camera!
Stick to brands that use either their own or good lenses (ie carl-zeiss in sony).
Heavily research a camera before you buy - most good sources will offer similar conclusions for cameras
Search for "digital camera reviews" in google - i think steves cams and dp review are best.
Bear in mind what you want not what the company tell you what you need.
My camera to advise you to get is a canon s70 - \available here for £210 it is a 7 megapixel camera with blinding quality and features.

Looks like a good camera but i have been down the Megapixel road before.
Great Image size but poor quality and poor shutter speed with huge lag and poor in low light.
After much looking around in the end i bought a Konica Minolta Dimage Z5
5Mp with antishake (a must for low light situations) and with 12x optical zoom + much much more.
By far the best digital camera i have owned.
And they can be had for £160 if you look around

i bought this one last year as a present for someone.
Image quality was OK. Not the best but should suffice for most people. Was on a par with my Casio 5MP but not as good as my Canon 4MP.
Don't confuse more megapixels with better quality shots. The two aren't necessarily related.
One thing I noticed tho was the 8MP pics means that the image sizes end up being quite large. So you'll prob. need to buy a 1GB SD card.
The fact it comes with 2 batteries is useful especially if your going on holiday and the docking station is also useful for hooking up to the PC.0
